Help for importing recipes directly into Recipe Manager

Find recipe entry help for:
website           email           copy/paste           text entry           dictation
from picklists        clean-up current recipes with all text in directions

From a website:

When you tap the + on the Recipe Box screen, select “Import from Web” to open the browser within the app. For your convenience, we’ve provided links to popular recipe sites on the Recipe Import Menu page that we have tested and verified to work with the recipe import function. If you navigate away from this page, tap “Home” at the top of the Recipe Manager browser, or tap the List of Recipe Sites link on the sidebar. This page is also found in the drop down menu under “Recipe Manager with Serving Sizer”.

Enter a specific recipe website URL if you do not wish to click the provided links.

Other recipe sites and blogs will import as well, but have not been explicitly tested. If you run across issues with a recipe import, try using the Import>Paste function or the Import>Type/Dictate function instead. If you have a site that you use frequently that continues to have import issues, please feel free to suggest it to us (Tap Contact in the menu above), and we will prioritize that site ahead of others on our list. Recipe sites are not standardized, so support for all sites is a continuous process.

Once you find a recipe, be sure you have followed the links to the full recipe (some websites only list ingredients, or a partial recipe). Tap Import at the top of the custom browser in the app. The app will process the recipe and provide a preview. If all looks good, tap Import at the bottom of the screen to import. If you change your mind, tap Cancel.

From email:

Easily share recipes between users of Recipe Manager with Serving Sizer. If you receive an email from a current user of Recipe Manager with Serving Sizer, you can now auto-import that recipe into the app by clicking the link in the email. The app will open and add the recipe automatically. No more cut/paste between customers of Recipe Manager with Serving Sizer!

If you want to import a recipe from a general email, or an email from another recipe app, just highlight the text of the recipe, then open Recipe Manager, tap the + on the Recipe Box screen and select “Paste Recipe”. The text will automatically be pasted from the clipboard. Tap Preview to see if it will import correctly. If not, you can tap Cancel and edit the text as necessary. Sometimes if a recipe from copied text is not standard, you will get an error message, but again, you can edit the text to a importable format. At the end, tap Import and the recipe will be stored in your recipe box.

Copy/Paste:

Copy any text source on your iPad: email, website, or any other text source, then open Recipe Manager, and tap + on the Recipe Box screen, select Paste Recipe. Just like the text from email noted above, the text will automatically be pasted from the clipboard.

Using dictation

Dictate your recipe into the app! We’ve made it easier to dictate the entire recipe. First add a new recipe by tapping + on the Recipe Box screen. Select Type/Dictate Recipe. Tap the microphone on the keyboard to start dictating. When finished, tap Preview. If necessary, tap Cancel and edit the recipe so it formats as desired. Tap Import to bring the recipe into the app.

Tip: If the recipe isn’t importing for you, make sure you have a Recipe Title, plus try adding the word “Ingredients” preceding ingredients and the word “Directions” preceding directions. This should help the app import your recipe.

Here are a few tips for using dictation on the iPad:

Basics:
To get a carriage return, say “new line”.
To get a period, say “period”.
To get a comma, say “comma”.
To get 1/2 cup, just say “one half cup” and it will convert.
To get “450°F”, say “four hundred and 50 degrees Fahrenheit”

More tips:

  • “All Caps” turns all of the following text into ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • “New Paragraph”, as the name implies, starts a new paragraph.
  • Dollar amounts and dates are automatically recognized, so saying “fourteen dollars and twenty five cents” will appear as “$14.25,” and “august twenty-first twenty-sixteen at 6 AM” will appear “August 21, 2016 at 6 AM.”
  • “Smiley” and “Frowny” correspond to their emoticons, and are displayed as       “:-)” and “:-(” respectively.
  • Punctuation like “comma”, “period”, and “quotation mark”, all work the way you would expect.

Formatting:
Cap to capitalize a word: ‘I need to go to cap Costco”

Caps On for titles: “I purchased caps on The Chicago Tribune”

All Caps to capitalize the next word: “Can you buy this for me all caps PLEASE”

All Caps On and All Caps Off are Caps Lock: “You are all caps on DRIVING ME NUTS all caps off so please stop it”

No Caps, No Caps On, and No Caps Off are the exact opposite of the above: “I like Celeste and no caps celeste”

Space Bar inserts a space, but also can be used to prevent a hyphen in normally hyphenated words: “A long-lasting or long space bar lasting flavor.”

No Space for words you want together: “In general, the Internet has replaced the phrase World no space Wide no space Web”

No Space On & No Space Off for words you want together: “I was talking no space on reallyreallyfast no space off the entire time”

Punctuation, Symbols, other tips:

Say punctuation: period  comma  apostrophe  open-parenthesis  close-parenthesis  asterisk  open quote  close quote. Saying apostrophe is unnecessary for possessive names such as “Vanessa‘s”.

Hyphen — like this, and a dash – like this, are different. Point (in numbers) and period have spacing differences.

Special symbols:  Many of these will automatically be placed in context, such as the dollar, cent, degree, percent, and at signs:

  • % – percent sign
  • © – copyright sign
  • ® – registered sign
  • § – section sign
  • $ – dollar sign
  • ¢ – cent sign
  • ° – degree sign
  • ^ – caret
  • @ – at sign
  • £ – pound sterling sign
  • # – pound sign

Using Ingredient Database and Measures Picklists

    (original recipe entry method)

When you tap the + on the Recipe Box screen, select “Add New Recipe”. All imported recipes will also use this recipe card edit screen. You can additional items to the imported recipes, such as categories. Or you can enter the recipes directly on this recipe card.

    • Tap on “Recipe Name” to enter the recipe’s name.
    • Tap on “Serves” to edit the serving sizes.
      • Enter recipe’s original serving size.
Enter number of guests for new serving size–change any time your guest list changes.
Alternately, select Halve, Original, Double, Triple.
Original resets the new serving size to Original number.
    • Tap on “Categories” to designate multiple categories for the recipe.
    • Tap on “No Photo” to add a photo. Choose New Photo or Use Existing Photo to add a photo from “Photos” on iPad.
    • Tap under “Directions” to pull up the keyboard to enter steps for making the recipe. Flick to scroll directions that are longer than the current view.
    • Tap on “add new ingredient” to add ingredients. Flick in the ingredient area to scroll complete list of ingredients. You can add or edit current ingredients.
      • A popover comes up:
Enter amounts in whole numbers and fractions (using slider).
Pick units, sorted by type: Volume, Weight, or Items (for whole items like eggs, or “cans of beans”).
Select from 500+ ingredients. Find easily via search or side ABC index, or flick through the list. New ingredients can be added with the +, or edited.
Tap outside the popover to accept changes.

More details on using the edit recipe card screen, adding and editing ingredients, and other help can be found on our main help page for Recipe Manager.

    Cleaning up old recipes

In the past, the best way to paste recipe text into the recipes was to paste the entire text into Directions. Ingredients would have to moved manually, but only if you did not wish to scale the recipe. Otherwise, you could tap on the whisk and view the recipe in Cooking Mode with no difference. With the import update, this is no longer necessary, but many have scores of recipes with everything in the directions. So we added a way to clean these recipes up, if desired. Here’s how:

Select the recipe and open up the Recipe Card. Tap on the Settings icon (gear). Select “Import recipe from directions”. Follow the prompts. Edit as necessary. It’s that easy.
